Topeka Fire Department and the OSMF are investigating a detached garage fire, and the death of one resident of the garage Thursday morning

Topeka, KS – According to the statement, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 2:08 a.m. Thursday.

Topeka Fire Department crews responded to 1435 NW Jackson St. on a report of the detached garage behind the residence on fire.

Upon arrival, TFD crews found heavy fire and smoke coming from the detached garage located behind the residence.

While TFD was performing an offensive fire attack on the garage, fire crews located an adult victim inside the garage who was deceased.

The fire was quickly contained and no other structures were damaged.

The garage was converted into a make shift residence and the victim was living in the space. 

The deceased has been identified as Jennifer G. Bowers, 56, of Meriden.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
