Suspect dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound after kidnapping, standoff in Mitchell County

Mitchell County, KANSAS – According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the 59-year-old suspect in a kidnapping died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a long standoff.

On Saturday, 78-year-old man reported that he was kidnapped at gunpoint and held for 26 hours by an acquaintance.

Authorities tried to serve a search warrant at the suspect’s home on Sunday night.

The 59-year-old suspect refused to come out of the house.

Standoff ensued, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said.

Shot was heard from inside the house on Monday morning. 

Officers went into the home and found the 59-year-old man dead in an upstairs bedroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was later identified as John Roudybush.

This incident remains under investigation.
