A pregnant 28-year-old mother has died after her vehicle was struck by a suspect fleeing the police in Oklahoma City on Monday. According to reports, she had two children and was pregnant with her third when she was involved in the accident with a speeding pickup truck. Her family say she had just dropped off her kids at daycare.
Shells was rushed to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, but sadly died from her injuries.
Authorities say the suspect, 38-year-old Wacey Mikles, stole a pickup truck from a nearby construction site at around 7:30 a.m. on Monday morning. He then led police on a chase that ended when he collided with Shells’ vehicle.
“My family has been going through it,” Shells’ cousin, Donnice, said. “I lost an uncle Friday, and then this happened this morning.”
Capt. Daniel Stewart, of the Oklahoma City Police Department, said: “What we know so far is that a vehicle was left running with the keys in it. Someone jumped inside the vehicle and left.”
Police spotted the stolen pickup about 30 minutes later, and tried to stop it.
“When they did that, the driver initiated a pursuit,” Capt. Daniel explained. “The pursuit lasted about six minutes and ended here at the crash site.”
Mikles later slammed into Shells’ car, with both parties being taken to OU Medical Center. Tragically, Shells could not pull through.
Mikles, meanwhile, remains in hospital. He’s been arrested and is facing charges of second-degree murder, felony eluding and possession of meth.
