A Texas teacher has been arrested for allegedly shooting her son to death while driving him to school

Police officers at the scene found a 17-year-old boy from Texas, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Authorities allege he was shot multiple times by his 39-year-old mother, who was driving him to school. Following the shooting, she walked away from the vehicle and asked two people for help. She reportedly told them that her son was “with her mother in heaven” and also said, “What have I done? … This is not real.”

Authorities on the scene found Sarah Hunt’s van still running and her son dead inside. Also inside the vehicle was a .40 caliber pistol, an extra magazine, and numerous bullet casings on the floor.

Hunt and her son were new to the area, according to authorities. On the day of the incident, Hunt picked her son up from a camper where the boy’s father was living and was supposed to give him a ride to school, the affidavit stated.

Authorities do not yet know what led to the shooting. When questioned, Hunt responded by sobbing and repeating, “I didn’t mean to, I didn’t mean to,” according to KWTX.

McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said during Monday’s press conference that his office will be “working overtime” to figure out what happened.

“At this point, we don’t have a motive, we don’t know what happened, we don’t know what led up to this,” McNamara said. “It’s a big mystery, and that’s what we’re trying to determine – what caused this. We just don’t know at this point.”

Hunt has been charged with murder and remains in custody in lieu of $500,000 bond, online jail records show. Hunt began working as a fifth-grade teacher at Lake Air Montessori Magnet School during the summer before the current school year. Following the shooting, she was placed on administrative leave and is expected to either resign or be terminated, the outlet reported.
