A local resident was killed in a crash while trying to avoid police

Lawrence, KS – According to the police report, a woman from Bonner Springs was injured during the crash. This unfortunate incident occurred early Wednesday morning, while he was trying to avoid police.

According to the report, police officers in Bonner Springs responded on reports of a person driving at high rates of speed in a residential neighborhood near Scheidt Lane and Woodend Avenue.

The officers did not locate the suspect driver at that time. One hour later, officers responded again to the same area and located the vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed. The driver was traveling at speeds of 114 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone.

The officers tried to stop the suspect driver, but lost sight due to the high rate of speed. A moments later, the officers found the vehicle where the suspect driver had crashed into a tree near Loring Lane and Stillwell Road.

According to the police report, the driver was indentified as 22-year-old Juan Carlos Marquez. He was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries. An 18-year-old female passenger, from Bonner Springs, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
