Lawrence Police Department responds to incident involving man with knife

Lawrence, KS – Multiple officers from the Lawrence Police Department responded to an emergency assistance call around 11:40 this morning after a man brandished a knife when contacted by police.

Officers had been initially dispatched to Dillon’s, located at 4701 W 6th Street, following a report of a disturbance.

Upon arrival, the first officer on scene located the 37-year-old suspect walking in the 600 block of Champion Lane, in the middle of the street.

As the officer exited the vehicle, the suspect approached, despite being ordered to stop, and produced a knife from his sleeve.

The officer drew his weapon and retreated, calling for backup. After additional officers arrived, the suspect complied with commands to drop the knife. The man was safely taken into custody without further incident.

Due to statements regarding prescription drug abuse, he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Upon his release, he will be transported to the Douglas County Correctional Facility.
