This 10-year-old boy from Michigan was one of the thousands of people who had tested positive for COVID-19. However, he didn’t even have one single symptom, his mother said. Suddenly, he started getting severe headaches and he was admitted to the hospital with a temperature of 103 degrees. The little boy was diagnosed with multi-system inflammatory syndrome, also known as MIS-C-a rare, overactive immune response that leads to inflammation of various body parts, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.
The boy had to be put on a ventilator as the rest of his organs were shutting down, causing his heart to overwork. To help his heart function, the 10-year-old had to be put on dialysis and hooked up to an ECMO machine. Sadly, when Dae’Shun was intubated, he lost circulation in his hands and feet. His legs also began to swell up with fluid. This caused severe damage and eventually his right leg had to be amputated. He had no feeling or movement left in his right extremity, said doctors. His mom then revealed that his left leg will also have to be removed.
“They say don’t question God, but I don’t understand, why my son?”. “I wouldn’t want it to happen to anyone else’s child, but why me?” His right leg was amputated on Jan 15th, 2021, and by Feb 22nd, the decision was made to amputate both extremities and his remaining leg as his hands became damaged due to a lack of blood flow following his first amputation.
Life will never be the same for Dae’Shun, but Autman is hopeful that he’s going to overcome and adapt. Dae’Shun will now learn to adjust to his new life in rehabilitation therapy, and Autman is optimistic her son will be able to use prosthetics when he’s ready. “I’m trying to find ways to get him back to the way he was as much as possible,” she said. “That’s my goal for him. That’s what I want for him.”
A GoFundMe has been set up on Dae’Shun’s behalf to raise money for his treatment. “My heart is broken to see my son in this situation and I just want/need him to get through this so I can bring him home. So if you have it in your hearts to bless my family in this time of need, words can’t express my gratitude,” wrote the mother.
